San José - Caldera Concession

The San José-Caldera highway is considered as the project that will position Costa Rica in the group of countries that carry out works through public concession. The construction of the road began on January 9, 2008. The project is made up of three sections:

1) San José – Ciudad Colón:

Constructions on this section began in 2008, ending in May 2009. It's distance is 14 kilometers and implies the improvement of the track, in the four existing lanes (two for each direction) and the extension to six in the section between the exchanges of Circunvalación and Multiplaza.

SOME CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS SECTION ARE:

2)Ciudad Colón – Orotina:

According to the Concession Agreement, this is a new section of 38 km, which was inaugurated in January 2010.

Because it's a new construction, the most important works that were carried out are the earth movement, installation of drainage systems, construction of walls and uneven structures, exchanges and pavements.

Some communities along this route are: San Rafael de Alajuela, La Guácima, Siquiares, Turrúcares, Cebadilla, Concepción de Atenas, Pan de Azúcar, Balsa, Escobal, Dantas, Hacienda Vieja and Orotina.

3) Orotina-Caldera:

The beginning of the works of this section occurred in September 2008 and its opening was on May 2009, covering total of 24 km of the existing section that consists in two lanes, one for each direction.

For pavement laying it is used high technology machinery for the recovery of existing material.
